Spare tube, levers, mini-pump and the full procedure: punctures stop being a drama with a little practice.

Fixing a Bike Puncture in 10 Minutes (and What to Always Carry)

There is a special silence that falls over a group when someone punctures - followed by everyone checking their own tires. Fixing a flat is a 10-minute job if you know how, and a ride-ender if you do not. Here is the complete routine.

What to always carry

Minimum kit: one spare tube (right size and valve!), tire levers, mini-pump or CO2 inflator, and a patch kit as backup. Tubeless riders add sealant top-ups and a plug kit for bigger holes. All of it fits in a saddlebag smaller than a fist - there is no excuse for the classic I thought someone else had it.

The repair, step by step

Shift to the smallest cog, release the wheel, lever one side of the tire off. Pull the tube, then run a finger inside the tire to find the thorn or glass that caused it - skipping this means puncturing the new tube in 2 km. Insert the new tube slightly inflated, tuck the tire back (last stretch with hands, not levers, to avoid pinching), inflate, check the bead is even, ride.

Tubeless: what changes

With sealant, small holes fix themselves - you just spin the wheel so the sealant reaches the hole. For bigger cuts, push in a plug with the tool, trim the excess, inflate. Only if that fails do you put in a tube like a normal tire (remember to remove the tubeless valve first). Carry a tube anyway: sealant does not fix sidewall tears.

In short

Practice at home once, calmly, and the roadside repair becomes routine. Ten minutes, no panic, and you are the hero of the group instead of the reason everyone waited half an hour.

Recommended products

The bare minimum fits in a complete bike puncture repair kit with patches, glue and levers, always in the saddle bag.

The spare tube must be the right size: bike inner tubes are chosen by tire size and valve type of your own wheel.

Without a pump the new tube stays flat: a lightweight bike mini frame pump mounts on the frame and is forgotten until needed.

To unseat the tire without pinching the tube, plastic tire levers beat any improvised tool.

To inflate in seconds, consider a CO2 bike inflator with a couple of spare cartridges.
