Hydration and Fueling: The Anti-Bonk Strategy for Long Rides

Ask any group why a ride fell apart and sooner or later someone says: I ran out of water, or I bonked. Hydration and fueling are the least glamorous and most decisive part of long rides - and the easiest to get wrong.

Drink before you are thirsty

Thirst is a late signal: when you feel it, you are already slightly dehydrated and performance is dropping. The rule is small sips every 10-15 minutes from the start, not big gulps once an hour. A 750 ml bottle lasts about 1-1.5 hours in mild weather: on rides over 2 hours, plan where to refill - fountains, bars, and in Italy cemeteries always have water.

When water is not enough

Up to 90 minutes, water is fine. Beyond that, or in heat, you lose salts with sweat that water alone does not replace: that is where cramps and that empty feeling come from. An electrolyte tablet or sachets in the second bottle solve it cheaply. No need for fancy products - just sodium, potassium and magnesium.

Eat early, eat often

The bonk arrives when glycogen runs out, usually after 2-3 hours without eating - and once it hits, no gel truly brings you back. Prevention: start eating after 45-60 minutes, then something small every 30-45 minutes (banana, bar, dried fruit, sandwich). About 30-60 g of carbs per hour is the range that works for most amateurs.

In short

Bottle within reach, sip every 15 minutes, salts after 90 minutes, food from minute 45. Rides are not ruined by legs - they are ruined by empty bottles and empty pockets. Pack them like you pack the pump.

For longer efforts, energy gels for cycling are the most compact way to carry carbs in a pocket.

If the bike has a single mount, a second side-loading bike bottle cage solves rides over two hours.
