First granfondo: how to prepare in 8 weeks
An 8-week plan for your first granfondo: choosing the course, training plan, fueling, race-day pacing and kit checklist.
1. Pick the right course
For your first granfondo choose the short or medium course with elevation you have already tested in training. Finish strong and smiling.
2. The 8-week plan
Weeks 1-3: easy base with long rides. Weeks 4-6: build with climbs and intensity. Week 7: taper. Week 8: race. Never stack two hard weeks without recovery.
3. Fueling and race day
Eat about 60 g of carbs per hour, drink before you're thirsty, start easy and join a group at your pace. Prep everything the night before.
FAQ
How many km per week do I need?
150-200 km per week with a long weekend ride is enough for the medium course, built up over 8 weeks.
How do I train climbs living somewhere flat?
With short threshold repeats on overpasses and embankments, stacking weekly elevation, plus one long hilly ride a month.
What to do the week before the race?
Cut volume by 50-60% with short intensity openers, study the course and sleep well two nights before. Nothing new on race day.
Can I ride it on the bike I already own?
Yes, if it's serviced: good tires and climb-friendly gears matter more than the model.
