Gravel riding: how to start on white roads and dirt tracks (beginner's guide)
What gravel is, which bike and tyres you need, how to pick your first routes and which mistakes to avoid when leaving the tarmac.

Gravel is the easiest way to rediscover the joy of riding away from traffic: white roads, packed dirt, farm tracks. You don't need to be a mountain-bike expert, just a bit more attentive than on tarmac.
What bike do you really need
A gravel bike has a frame similar to a road bike but wider tyres, usually between 35 and 45 mm, and easier gearing for dirt climbs. To start you don't have to buy a new one: many modern road bikes accept 32-35 mm tyres, enough for easy dirt. To understand the differences between road, gravel and MTB, read the guide on how to choose the right bike.
Tyres make the difference
On dirt, comfort and grip depend more on the tyre than on the frame. Wider tyres allow lower pressures, which means more grip and less vibration. Start with lower pressures than you would use on the road and adjust for weight, terrain and tyre, then fine-tune with experience. Many gravel bikes run tubeless, which reduces puncture risk, but a standard tube setup is fine to begin with.
Handling on dirt
Keep your arms relaxed, your weight slightly back on descents and your eyes far ahead, not on the front wheel. Brake before corners, never inside them, because the front wheel loses grip easily on gravel. On climbs stay seated with weight over the rear wheel so it doesn't spin.
First routes
Choose short routes, 30-40 km, with compact surface and little climbing, ideally ones you know. Riding time is longer than on tarmac: expect an average 2-3 km/h lower. Always carry a spare tube, pump and repair kit, since help is far away in isolated areas. On Velunite you can plan the route and check elevation and surface type before leaving.
What to buy to get started
To ride safely you need little: a pair of 40 mm gravel tyres and a bike repair kit.
Gravel isn't a fad: it's a more relaxed, curious way of riding. Start easy, pick quiet roads and let the route guide you.
