19 km at 9% average from Susa to 2176 m, with the last 8 km on gravel: the climb that won Froome the 2018 Giro with his 80 km attack. Hard but steady in the woods, then views over Val di Susa and the Fenestrelle fort. Road bike with 28 mm tires, full bottles: no water up top.

Colle delle Finestre da Susa: mappa, distanza e dislivello del percorso

Le Finestre is Italy's most famous mixed-surface climb: asphalt hairpins in the first part, then a long stretch of packed gravel up past 2,100 metres, introduced to the Giro in 2005 and used several times since.

What the climb is like

There are around fifty hairpins, mostly inside dense forest, which makes the climb repetitive and mentally tough. The last kilometres on white gravel are less steep but slower: the bike rolls less and the effort feels bigger.

You can ride it on a road bike with 28-32 mm tyres, but a gravel or endurance bike with wider tyres makes both the climb and the descent much safer.

Practical tips

Bring plenty of water and food: there are no refreshment stops on the climb. Check gravel conditions after heavy rain, because the surface can get worse.
