The Zoncolan is the hardest climb of the modern Giro d'Italia: roughly ten kilometres at an average gradient close to 12% from the Ovaro side, with pitches above 20%.
What the climb is like
The Ovaro side is the most feared: almost no relief, uphill tunnels, wide bends that do not break the effort. The hardest ramps come in the second half, when your legs are already spent.
Other sides (Sutrio, Liariis) have different gradients: worth comparing to see how much the choice of road matters on the same summit.
Practical tips
You need a very low gear (34x32 or easier; many riders use 34x34). Pick a cool day: heat on 20% ramps is punishing.
The summit is a historic Giro finish with a view over Friuli: stop and enjoy it, it is worth the effort.
