Stelvio Pass from Bormio
Created by Velunite ·
The symbol of Italian cycling: 21 km from Bormio to the 2758 m pass, through tunnels, hairpins and glacier views. Giro Cima Coppi and legendary stage since 1953, when Coppi dropped Koblet. Best tackled early on summer mornings, with an easy gear and a vest for the descent.

The Stelvio is the emblematic climb of Italian cycling: above 2,750 metres, it is one of the highest paved roads in the Alps and the highest point of the Giro d'Italia in many editions (the Cima Coppi).
What the climb is like
The Bormio side climbs for over twenty kilometres at an average gradient of about 7%: never brutal, never a rest either. Higher up the hairpins tighten and the altitude bites, with temperatures that can be several degrees below the valley even in summer.
The South Tyrol side, from Prato allo Stelvio, is the one with the 48 numbered hairpins, the postcard one; the Bormio side has fewer but is longer and steadier. They are two different climbs: choose by how hard you want to push and how much scenery you want.
When to go and what to bring
The road usually opens in late spring and closes with the first snow: the best window is mid-June to mid-September, ideally early in the morning to avoid traffic and afternoon storms. Always check the pass is open before you leave.
It is cold at the top even in August: bring a light windproof jacket and arm warmers for the long, fast descent. A compact drivetrain (34 front, 30-34 rear) makes the climb far more enjoyable.
