What development means
Development is the distance travelled per pedal revolution: wheel circumference times the ratio of chainring to cog teeth. The higher it is, the harder the gear.
Choosing a gear for climbing
For long, steep climbs you want to hold 80-90 rpm even on the hardest sections. If your easiest gear drops you below 60 rpm, consider a larger cog or a smaller chainring.
FAQ
- What is the wheel circumference of a 700x28?
- About 2,136 mm. A 700x25 is about 2,105 mm.
- Compact or standard?
- For long climbs and amateur riders a compact (50/34) gives easier gearing; a standard (53/39) suits strong riders on flat roads.
