eMTB motors: DJI Avinox M2S against Bosch CX Gen 5

In 2026 the eMTB conversation changed because of one number: 1,500 W. That is the peak power claimed by the DJI Avinox M2S motor, launched in April, against the 600 W and 85 Nm the fifth-generation Bosch Performance Line CX launched with. On paper that looks like a huge gap, but Bosch has since answered. Here we line up the official data (we take it from New Atlas, 10 April 2026), explain what it really means and what to look at before choosing a bike. All values are manufacturer claims, not our measurements.

The numbers side by side

The Avinox M2S claims 1,500 W peak, 150 Nm of torque and 2.59 kg. The standard M2 drops to 1,100 W, 125 Nm and 2.65 kg. In the same comparison the Bosch CX Gen 5 is listed at 600 W, 85 Nm and 2.8 kg. The same comparison includes the Specialized Levo R (850 W and 111 Nm) and the MAHLE M40 (1,200 W and 120 Nm). Bosch has answered since: its free Performance Upgrade 2.0, available from 4 May 2026 through the eBike Flow app, takes the CX and CX-R up to 120 Nm of torque, as reported by Cube. On torque the gap has narrowed a lot; peak power, weight and batteries remain to compare.

What peak means

Peak is an instantaneous value, not the power a motor holds for long, and torque is the push at the crank, not at the wheel. On the trail other things matter: how the motor meters its help, noise, drag when you pedal little, response at low cadence. A motor with more torque does not make you faster on ordinary climbs; it mostly helps on steep, technical gradients, where assistance saves you from putting a foot down. Remember too that in Europe an e-bike is bound by law: assistance cuts out at 25 km/h and continuous rated power is 250 W. Peaks do not change those rules, but staying within the type approval matters, and vehicles sold as e-bikes that are not is a problem the Italian manufacturers' association has flagged.

Batteries and charging

The integrated FP700 pack of 700 Wh, needed to get the full 1,500 W, charges from 0 to 80 percent in 76 minutes with GaN fast charging, they say. There are also removable RS800 (800 Wh) and RS600 batteries, and the RS600 can be mounted on the frame as a range extender. Ducati, for its 2027 eMTBs, also uses the M2S with an 800 Wh battery, but claims 1,300 W peak and 130 Nm (150 Nm with Boost): power depends on how the brand configures the system, so the bike spec sheet counts for more than the motor one.

Who fits it and what is coming

Avinox says more than 60 partner brands. Names mentioned include Amflow (DJI's own eMTB brand, the first to adopt the system), Canyon, Mondraker, Pivot, Propain, Rotwild and Thömus. These are not sales figures: they are makers that have announced use of the motor. Eurobike 2026 also brought the Avinox MG concept, with a gearbox built into the motor: Avinox has not given a production date: for now it is a concept seen on prototypes (Canyon, Commencal, Forbidden, Mondraker), so nothing changes for anyone buying today.

How to choose without being led by the spec sheet

First, ask where you ride. On average trails a Bosch CX is plenty; on long, steep climbs with a load (backpack, child seat, bikepacking) torque matters, and so does battery size. Second, real weights and range, not peaks: read independent tests. Third, service: a motor with a service network near home is worth more than an extra number. Fourth, the cost of batteries and spares. Fifth, and most important, the bike: geometry, travel and size weigh more than the motor. If you first want to understand how an e-bike works, read our guide, and for the type of bike road, gravel or MTB. On today's market, discounts and stock are no detail: 2026 is a transition year, and last year's model with a good motor often makes more sense than a new one at 9,000 euros.
