On 9 May 2027 you run against a car. There is no fixed finish to chase: a vehicle starts after you, speeds up in steps and catches up with you. That is the heart of Wings for Life World Run, the charity race that everyone starts at the same moment around the world. The official site gives the start as 11:00 local time. A correre.it headline dated 6 November says registrations are open, but the official site, checked today, does not yet show the fee. Check there before you pay.
How it works, in short
Everyone starts together, wherever they are. You can run alone with the app, or join an event organised locally. The catcher car is virtual in the app: it starts after the gun, and whoever gets caught ends their race there. The site says 100% of the entry fees go to research into spinal cord injuries. We have not checked the foundation's accounts, so we report what the site states.
The car's profile, and your sums
Third-party listings repeat a schedule that has circulated for years. According to it, the catcher car starts 30 minutes after the gun at 14 km/h and rises in half-hour steps: 15, 16, 17 and 18 km/h, then 22 km/h after three hours and 26 km/h after three and a half. It is not the official 2027 rulebook: some listings still show older figures, and one gives the times in UTC. Wait for the organiser's full details before you build a plan on it.
With this profile, three steady paces show the problem. This is our own arithmetic, not a rule. At 10 km/h, about 6:00 per km, the car catches you after roughly 1 hour 35 minutes, around 15.8 km. At 12 km/h, 5:00 per km, it catches you after about 2 hours 18 minutes, at around 27.6 km. At 14 km/h, 4:17 per km, the catch comes after about 3 hours and a quarter, at roughly 45.5 km.
The official calculator on the site gives a minimum pace of 6:07 per km, but the text we read does not say which target that refers to. We do not have an answer to that, and we say so. The arithmetic teaches one thing anyway: the car speeds up as the race goes on. If you aim for a long distance, you cannot afford to lose ground in the first two hours, because winning it back later costs far more than it seems.
Cost, dates and what to check
We will not give you a figure: the official sources we read show neither the 2027 fee nor the opening date. What we can offer is the checklist we would follow ourselves. Find your city on the official site first, since registration goes through the locations and the app. Confirm the fee and the date on the site itself, not from a news item that may have run ahead of it. If you run alone, decide your pace before the start and keep it on your watch, so the first kilometres do not carry you away. To judge how hard to push, the marathon time calculator can give you a sense of the pace you are used to from a recent race, although it was not built for this format.
Our view
We like a race where the enemy is not kilometre 21 but a car that waits for nobody. We like it less when the message stays vague. "100% of the fees go to research" is a fine line, but we can only check it against what the site declares. If you are weighing it against spring races, the 2027 calendar lists the options. And if you already tried to get into a 2027 marathon, read how the 2027 marathons sold out and how to get in anyway.
Have you ever run with a vehicle at your back? Did a steady pace do it for you, or did you panic by kilometre ten? Tell us in the comments. The stories of people who were caught are the most useful ones for a first-timer.
