How to Choose the Right Gear Ratio for Road and Gravel

A practical guide to picking chainrings and cassettes: compact vs semi-compact vs 1x, and how to work out the gearing you actually need for your routes and climbs.

One of the most common mistakes among riders new to road or gravel cycling is obsessing over frame weight while ignoring the drivetrain. But the right gear ratio — the combination of front chainrings and rear cassette — affects your rides far more than 500 grams saved on the frame. It's what decides whether you climb seated and steady or standing and gasping for air.

Compact, semi-compact, or standard: what actually changes

A compact crankset (50/34) remains the most versatile choice for mixed routes with normal climbs: paired with an 11-32 or 11-34 cassette, the 34-tooth ring gives you agile gearing even on tough gradients. Semi-compact (52/36) is a compromise for riders who want more punch on the flats without fully giving up climbing ease. Standard gearing (53/39) only makes sense for mostly flat routes or high-tempo racing — on routes with real elevation gain, it's almost always the wrong choice for a recreational rider today.

Gravel and the 1x revolution

On gravel, 1x drivetrains (a single front chainring, usually 38-42 teeth, paired with very wide-range cassettes like 10-50 or 10-52) have gained ground because they simplify the drivetrain, reduce maintenance, and remove the risk of dropping a chain off-road. The trade-off is bigger jumps between gears compared to a double: for long, fast gravel fondos on flatter terrain, a 2x setup is often still more efficient, while for technical routes and simplicity, 1x is almost always the right call.

Working out the lowest gear you actually need

A practical rule: if on your area's toughest climbs you're often forced to zig-zag or your cadence drops below 60-65 rpm, your lowest available gear is too hard. That's a mechanical problem, not a fitness one. Work out the gear ratio (chainring divided by cog) of your easiest combination: below 1:1 (e.g. 34x34) most Italian-style climbs become manageable; below 0.85 (e.g. 34x40 or 36x42) you'll have real margin even on gradients above 15%.

The mistake of overestimating your own legs

Many riders choose gearing that's too hard out of pride, worried that a wide-range cassette looks 'beginner'. In reality, pedaling at too low a cadence to compensate for the wrong gearing puts more strain on your joints and burns more muscular energy for the same power output. The pros you see climbing at 85-95 rpm are almost always spinning easier gears than you'd expect — the difference is in the legs, not the gearing choice.

When to just swap the cassette instead of the whole drivetrain

If you already run a compact crankset but still struggle on your local climbs, switching from an 11-28 to an 11-32 or 11-34 cassette is often enough: many modern groupsets (Shimano 105/Ultegra, SRAM Rival/Force) support this jump without changing the derailleur, or at most just upgrading to a long-cage rear derailleur. It's a cheap fix that often solves the problem better than buying a new crankset.
