Jacket, vest or rain cape: how to dress for cycling in autumn 2026

October and November are the trickiest months to dress for on a bike: you might set off at 8°C under grey skies and come home with sun and 16°C, or the exact opposite. The difference between an enjoyable ride and coming home with frozen hands often comes down to a single garment, chosen well or badly. Let's look at when a jacket is worth it, when a vest is enough, and when you genuinely need a rain cape.

The thermal vest: the most useful compromise

A windproof vest is probably the most useful piece in a cyclist's autumn wardrobe: it protects the chest, where most heat loss happens, while leaving the arms free to thermoregulate under a simple long-sleeve base layer. It's perfect for temperatures between 10 and 16°C, especially under clear skies with low rain risk. It folds into a jersey pocket in seconds, which is why many riders carry one on every ride, regardless of the forecast.

Windproof or softshell jacket: when the cold is real

Below 10°C, or with strong wind, a vest isn't enough anymore: that's where a jacket comes in, in its two main flavours. A lightweight windproof jacket is designed to block air without overheating you, ideal for riders pushing a steady pace who generate their own warmth. A softshell jacket, more structured, adds a bit of thermal insulation and suits the 5-8°C range or longer, less intense rides where the body produces less metabolic heat.

The rain cape: the real weapon against rain

Neither of the above is meant for sustained rain. When the forecast calls for rain for the whole ride, a cycling rain cape (cut longer at the back to protect the lower back) is the only truly effective option: waterproof, breathable membranes, taped seams and a minimal packed weight for rides where rain is only possible, not certain.

How to combine them

The most versatile combination for Italian autumn remains a long-sleeve jersey plus a vest, with the rain cape always in the backpack or jersey pocket on uncertain-weather days. Riders doing long mountain outings, where weather changes quickly with altitude, should also read our guide on reading the forecast before a bike ride to decide what to pack before setting off.

Recommended products

A few references to round out the autumn wardrobe: a windproof cycling vest, a softshell cycling jacket, a waterproof bike rain cape, autumn cycling gloves and cycling shoe covers for your feet, often the coldest part of all.
