After the saddle, your shorts are the most important item for comfort on the bike. A good pair is the difference between a pleasant three-hour ride and one spent shifting constantly on the seat.
Shorts or bibs?
Shorts are simpler to put on and manage, but the waistband can bother you in a bent-over position. Bibs, with straps, stay in place, don't squeeze your stomach and are usually more comfortable on long rides. The downside is a harder bathroom stop. Many people pick bibs for long rides and shorts for short ones.
The padding (chamois)
The chamois cushions and reduces friction: you don't need the thickest, you need the one that suits your saddle and ride length. Too thick can cause heat and irritation, too thin tires you on long distances. Pair it with the right saddle: our guide on adjusting your bike helps.
Fabric and cut
Look for stretchy, breathable fabrics with flat seams. The cut should fit without squeezing: loose shorts move and cause chafing. Also check the leg gripper: elastic or silicone bands should hold without compressing.
Size
Always try them in the riding position, or simulate bending over: standing everything seems fine, but bent over shorts can pull on the back. If you are between sizes, the snugger one is usually better as long as it doesn't dig in.
Hygiene and care
Change shorts after every ride and wash at low temperature without fabric softener, which damages the chamois. Air dry.
How much to spend
You do not need the highest price: what matters is the pad, the fabric and the fit. A well-made mid-range model is often better than an expensive one in the wrong size. Read reviews looking for comments on rides of three or four hours, not just first impressions.
Common mistakes
Wearing underwear under the pad, which creates seams and chafing; choosing the size from your jeans; keeping shorts well beyond their useful life, when the pad is already flattened. If you get recurring irritation, consider changing model or saddle, and if it persists talk to a doctor.
Where to start
To start, look at men's bib shorts or women's padded cycling shorts.
Investing in a good chamois is the spend you feel most on long rides.
