Nine stages, three kinds of day

The 2027 route falls into three blocks. Stages 1 to 3 are in England: stage 1 is flat, 86 km from Leeds to Manchester with 1,400 m of climbing; stage 2 is classed as 'accidentée' (hilly), 154 km and 2,800 m from Manchester to Sheffield; stage 3 is an 18 km team time trial in London with 85 m of climbing. Stages 4, 5 and 6 cross northern and central France and are mostly flat: 123 km from Le Touquet-Paris-Plage to Calais, 161 km from Neufchâtel-en-Bray to Magnanville and 138 km from Orléans to Bourges, with between 820 and 1,940 m of climbing. From stage 7 the race gets harder: 155 km from Nevers to La Loge des Gardes (2,200 m, 'accidentée'), 151 km from La Bourboule to Clermont-Ferrand (3,000 m, mountain) and the final 170 km from Clermont-Ferrand to the Puy de Dôme (3,840 m). For a rider the number that matters is not the average distance, about 128 km a stage, but the climbing of the last three days: more than 9,000 metres over three days in a row.

How to read the stages: climbing, not just kilometres

The figure that changes your training is metres of climbing per kilometre. Stage 2 has about 18 m per km (2,800 m over 154 km), stage 8 about 20 m per km (3,000 over 151) and stage 9 more than 22 m per km (3,840 over 170). At an average of 30 km/h a 150 km stage takes about five hours, so long climbs in the saddle matter more than speed on the flat. Stage 9 ends on the Puy de Dôme after 170 km, so pacing the final hours is the hardest part of that day. Among the routes on Velunite you will find rides with long climbs you can use as training.

Tips for this race

  • Check the elevation profile of each stage on the official site before you choose your gears: on the stage pages we read, the profile values do not appear in the text.
  • Stages 7, 8 and 9 follow one another: train recovery between hard days, not just the single climb.
  • Stage 9 finishes on the Puy de Dôme: if you want to watch the finish, check access and traffic with the organiser before you travel.
