Where to run and cycle in Florence
Florence is ringed by hills: Fiesole, the Chianti and the Mugello have been the training ground of generations of cyclists. For runners there are the Cascine and the river embankments.
Where to run in Florence
Parco delle Cascine
The big park along the Arno, several kilometres long: flat, shaded, very popular with Florentine runners.
River embankments (Lungarni)
For easy runs with a view, best early in the morning when the centre is empty.
San Miniato and Piazzale Michelangelo
The ramps climbing from the Oltrarno are short but intense: ideal for hill repeats.
Bike rides from Florence
Fiesole
The classic climb starting from the city, made famous by the 2013 World Championships circuit. From the top you carry on towards Olmo and the Mugello.
Chianti
Along the Chiantigiana towards Greve and Panzano: constant ups and downs among vineyards. One of the most beautiful places in the world to ride.
Monte Morello and Vallombrosa
For long climbs: Monte Morello north of the city, Vallombrosa towards the Pratomagno.
Practical tips
In summer the Chianti is very hot with few fountains: carry two bottles and plan a stop. The white gravel roads are beautiful, but you need suitable tyres.
