Where to run and cycle in Rome

Rome is a tough city for training: traffic, cobblestones and narrow pavements. In return it has some of Europe's biggest historic parks and, just outside, the Castelli Romani and the Appian Way.

Where to run in Rome

Villa Doria Pamphilj

The city's largest public park: dirt paths, lawns and gentle rolling terrain. Perfect for long runs and easy miles with no junctions.

Villa Borghese

Very central, with loops on paved and gravel paths. Handy if you work downtown; early in the morning it is almost empty.

Parco degli Acquedotti and Caffarella

Dirt tracks between the Roman aqueducts and the Caffarella valley, linked to the Appian Way park. Ideal to vary the surface and stretch the miles.

Lungotevere (cycle and pedestrian path)

The embankment along the Tiber is flat and car-free for many kilometres. Good for intervals and race pace; avoid the hottest hours in summer, there is little shade.

Bike rides from Rome

Castelli Romani

The classic training ground of Roman cyclists: Frascati, Rocca di Papa, Lake Albano and the Monte Cavo climb. Short and medium climbs, easy to combine into 60-100 km rides.

Via Appia Antica

Atmospheric but on Roman cobbles: better with wide tyres or on a gravel bike. On Sundays and holidays the urban stretch is largely closed to traffic.

Tiber cycle path

To leave the city on the flat, north or towards the sea, without taking the main roads. Useful for recovery rides or easy outings.

Practical tips

For bike rides start early: the main roads out of the city fill with traffic after 8 a.m. In summer run at dawn or after sunset and carry water: the drinking fountains ("nasoni") are your lifeline.
