Blockhaus by bike from Roccamorice: the complete climb guide

Blockhaus is the signature climb of Abruzzo: from Roccamorice the road rises more than a thousand meters toward the Majella, through hermitages, rock walls and views that open all the way to the Adriatic. It is a long, wild and quiet climb that suits a full day on the bike but demands respect: weather, gearing and fueling make the difference.

The Roccamorice side: the numbers

It is about 19 km from Roccamorice (520 m) to 1660 m at Mamma Rosa, passing Passo Lanciano and La Maielletta. The elevation gain is around 1140 m, so the average gradient is about 6 percent, but the average is misleading: there are long stretches above 9 percent and the final part is the hardest. It is one of the toughest sides of Blockhaus and has been part of Giro d'Italia history since the 1960s. To check profile and distances, use the route page on Velunite.

How to pace it

On a climb this long, steadiness matters more than explosiveness. On the lower slopes hold a pace that lets you breathe through your nose or speak in short sentences: if you start too hard, the kilometers above 9 percent become a reckoning. A practical way is to think in three blocks: the first 5-6 km as a warm-up, the middle part to keep even, and the last kilometers to play with whatever you have left. Without a power meter, heart rate and feel are enough. If you like numbers, the climb gradient and VAM calculator helps estimate times.

Gearing: what to run

On an average of about 6 percent with stretches over 9, easy gearing is a wise choice, not a surrender. A 50/34 compact with a cassette up to 30-34 teeth lets you spin on the hard sections and spares your knees. If you are not sure what ratios you have, the bike gear ratio calculator shows speed and cadence for each combination, and the article on cycling cadence explains which values are sustainable uphill.

When to go

Late spring and early autumn are the best times: in midsummer the lower part can be very hot, while up high temperatures drop a lot and wind can pick up. In winter the road to the top may be closed because of snow: always check conditions before leaving. Bring a light shell or windproof vest for the descent even if you start in sunshine: the difference between Roccamorice and Mamma Rosa is felt. To choose what to wear, read our guide to layering for cold-weather rides.

Food and water

Roccamorice and the nearby villages have fountains and cafes to stock up before the climb; up high services are limited, so leave with two bottles and something to eat. Eat before the steep parts, not during: with a high heart rate it is harder to get a gel down. A simple rule is to carry one bottle of water and one with a drink mix, and sip every 10-15 minutes. Details are in the guide to hydration and fueling on long rides.

The descent: the part people underestimate

The descent is fast and demands concentration: bends, asphalt that is not always perfect and, higher up, crosswinds. Check your brakes before starting and, if you descend after a long effort, accept going slower: your hands and forearms are tired. To improve, read about downhill cycling technique.

Who it suits

Trained cyclists with easy gearing and a few long climbs already in their legs. If these are your first long climbs, do it in a group or with a friend and agree on regrouping points beforehand: there are isolated stretches where your phone may have no signal. For planning, our guide to organising a group ride gives you a template.
